About: Leafair Community Association was established in April 1994, as a direct response to the high level of interest in community regeneration shown by residents during a Northern Ireland Housing Executive refurbishment programme. Some of the founding members are still involved with Leafair today, either in an employed capacity or as members of the committee. The Association was constituted on 25th April 1995. In 1996 a community audit of the area was commissioned which not only identified the main concerns and issues facing the local residents but also helped to set the Association’s aims and objectives. Essentially, the Association is concerned about socio-economic problems apparent within the area, in particular the increase in youth unemployment, low incomes, low community morale, low educational attainment and the lack of support for the marginalized and socially disadvantaged, including the elderly, lone parents and youth. The main priorities of the organisation are to empower local people, raise awareness, promote new opportunities and give the community a collective base from which to proactively address their concerns. Leafair Community Association will help enable people who have been excluded from life chances to live fuller lives and participate in their community.
